Logan Peak Trail Run 2013

Logan Peak, I have never run this race so why not and as a bonus Ryan could go fishing on the Logan river while I was running. Leading up to this I felt I was ready as I had not run a 'race' since Wasatch and had done plenty of climbing, running and training in the gym. It was going to be HOT so I prepared my supplies accordingly. Even went on a heat training run earlier in the week to see how I would feel.....
Beautiful view from the top of Dry Canyon
Trying to appreciate the AWESOME
flowers but was starting to feel like crap
Fake smile for sure..
So, off I went at 6:05 am, good pace to start and it continued all the way up Dry Canyon although a bit slow I welcomed it so I could conserve a little energy for a good long downhill at the end, my favorite. As the trail became more run-able I needed to pass a girl in front of me that kept tripping over her own feet and roots and I was getting distracted and could not keep a great pace. Asked if I could pass and she reluctantly moved slightly to the left and I made my move. Well, took a step onto some loose dirt/rocks and I went down.....was embarrassed so I jumped up and just took off saying sorry. More about this later. Passed some noisy cow clan (pretty sure they were doing the deed) and made my way to the next aid station.
Top of Logan Peak, beautiful view!!
Kept up on water, S-Caps, gels, bit of honey, jerky and a Luna bar early. Ate some potato chips, pretzels, the usual.. It was good to see familiar runners as I ascended and descended the peak. Peeing normal and ready to finish but was having some hip and knee pain that wasn't normal for me. Finally examined my hip from my fall earlier and could tell I fell harder than I thought and this could be the issue. Continued down the trail; run, drink, walk in shade, run, and so on. It was beautiful and there were tons of wildflowers but the heat and my energy level were definitely NOT letting me enjoy this part of the course. I tend to not look at maps on shorter runs and do not carry a watch so I looked at my phone and figured time-wise I was almost to the last aid station. Started to have negative thoughts...why the hell was I out here, it is f-ing HOT, I really need a beer(this could be a positive), my knee hurts, my foot hurts, this is really NOT very fun right now. Got to the spring and it felt awesome to get wet and take a cold drink..this was short lived. Aid Station #4 and I was being attacked by mosquitoes so I just filled up and was out of there. I thought it was 4 miles to the next fill up and then 3 more to the finish. I admit this because I know better than to assume....and sometimes I should really look at the map. Had to walk a lot on the downhill due to knee and heat and my throat hurt a lot...wasn't sure why cause I had drank a ton and managed my electrolytes to perfection for once. General feeling of CRAP and couldn't wait to be done. Got to the last water stop and asked a runner if he knew how much further to the finish and it was about a mile. Called Ryan and was glad he was on his way to the finish as I was ahead of estimated time of arrival. Told him to bring me a beer. It was really good to see him as usual and he was very helpful in getting my post race food and beverage. Pretty non-eventful except for the feeling in my throat continuing and after Maddox grilled cheese and french fries, a nap, and cold beverages I still felt weirder than I ever have after a race. Slowly I began to realize why, the WORST head cold ever!!! Went to bed early still in denial cause I just don't get sick. So as I sit and write this first blog post of said new blog I feel like death and hope this doesn't last long because I have major running plans later this week. Ratings of Logan Peak.... Beauty=10 Toughness=6 Race Shirt=10 Me Post Race=1
